Before calling a single painter, almost every Toronto homeowner asks the same question: how much is this actually going to cost? It's a fair question — and the internet is full of answers so vague they're useless. "It depends on the size of your home" doesn't help you figure out whether you need $2,000 or $10,000 set aside.
This guide gives you real numbers based on actual projects we do at DC Painting & Services across Toronto and the GTA. Interior painting, exterior painting, condo painting, cabinet painting — we'll break down what each one typically costs, what drives the price up or down, and what questions to ask before you sign off on any quote.
Note: These are our real price ranges. Every home is different, and the only way to get an accurate number for your specific project is a free on-site estimate — but this guide will get you close.
How much does interior painting cost in Toronto?
Interior painting is the most common project we do, and the price range is wider than most people expect — because the scope can vary enormously from a single bedroom touch-up to a full 3,000 sq ft home top to bottom.
Cost per room
A single room — bedroom, living room, dining room — typically runs $300–$700 at DC Painting, depending on the room size, ceiling height, and how much prep is needed. Bathrooms and powder rooms often sit at the lower end despite being small, because they're tight and fiddly to cut in around fixtures. Open-concept main floors (living/dining combined) run $600–$1,200 because the wall area is large even though it feels like one space.
Keep in mind: a single-room quote costs more per square foot than a whole-home project. Setup time — loading the van, laying drop cloths, taping edges — is nearly the same whether we're doing one room or ten.
Cost for a full home interior
Here's what full interior repaints typically cost at DC Painting, including labour, two coats of quality paint, prep, and cleanup:
These assume walls and ceilings in reasonable condition. Extensive drywall repairs, wallpaper removal, or multiple colour changes add to the timeline and cost. We flag anything like that upfront during the estimate.
Interior painting cost per square foot
If you want a rough ballpark before calling anyone: interior painting in Toronto runs $1.80–$3.00 per square foot of floor area for whole-home projects. Single rooms sit higher — closer to $4–$6 per square foot — because of fixed setup time. Labour accounts for roughly 70–80% of your total cost; paint and materials make up the rest.
How much does exterior painting cost in Toronto?
Exterior painting is more complex than interior — surface prep is heavier, access is harder, and the materials need to stand up to Toronto's freeze-thaw cycles. A properly done exterior repaint on a Toronto home involves cleaning, scraping, caulking, priming bare spots, and two finish coats. That's why exterior painting costs more per square foot than interior.
Typical exterior ranges
Homes with brick exteriors, extensive trim detail, or siding that hasn't been painted in 10+ years tend to sit at the higher end because of the prep required. We always inspect the exterior before quoting — what looks like a straightforward repaint sometimes has peeling primer or failed caulk underneath that needs to be dealt with properly.
What's typically included
- Power washing and surface cleaning
- Scraping and sanding loose or peeling paint
- Caulking around windows, doors, and trim gaps
- Spot priming bare surfaces
- Two finish coats of exterior paint
- Cleanup and walkthrough
Anything outside this scope — like replacing rotted wood, repairing stucco, or painting a deck separately — is quoted as an add-on. We spell all of this out in writing before any work starts.
How much does condo painting cost in Toronto?
Condos are a regular part of our work in Toronto, especially across North York, Etobicoke, and Mississauga. Condo painting comes with its own set of logistics — elevator booking windows, building noise bylaws, low-VOC paint requirements in some buildings, and the need to coordinate with property management. We handle all of that.
These include walls, ceilings, trim, and closet interiors. Units with dark accent walls, significant patching, or high-gloss finishes needing degloss before repainting will sit at the higher end of the range.
One thing condo owners are often surprised by: painting a condo is often less expensive than painting a comparably-sized house, because there's no exterior work and the layout is typically straightforward. The logistics add some time, but the overall scope is contained.
How much does cabinet painting cost in Toronto?
Cabinet painting is one of the most cost-effective renovations you can do in a Toronto kitchen. Replacing cabinets runs $15,000–$40,000+. Professional cabinet painting — spray-finished to a factory-quality enamel — typically costs $2,500–$4,000 for an average Toronto kitchen and lasts 8–10 years with normal use.
We spray cabinet doors off-site for a smooth, brush-mark-free finish. Cabinet boxes are painted in place. The whole process takes 3–5 days from start to reinstall. We use durable enamel coatings that hold up to daily kitchen use — not standard wall paint.
What factors affect painting cost the most?
Prep work
Prep is where most of the time goes and where most of the cost variation happens. A home with clean drywall and sound existing paint costs significantly less than one with peeling exterior paint, old wallpaper to remove, or plaster walls that need extensive patching. When we quote a job, we're essentially quoting the prep as much as the painting.
Paint quality
We use quality paints — Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams — on all our projects. Cheaper paint requires more coats, covers less uniformly, and doesn't last as long. The difference in material cost between a low-end and high-end paint on a typical room is $30–$60. We'd rather spend that and have the job look right in five years.
Ceiling height and access
Standard 8 ft ceilings are priced into the base rate. 9–10 ft ceilings add 10–20% to interior jobs. Cathedral or vaulted ceilings can add 30–50% depending on the pitch. Exterior walls that require scaffolding or an extension ladder add time and equipment cost.
Scope — what's included
Walls only vs walls + ceilings + trim + doors makes a big difference. When comparing quotes, make sure you're comparing the same scope. A $2,000 interior quote that only covers walls isn't cheaper than a $3,000 quote that covers everything — it's just incomplete.
Is summer more expensive for painting in Toronto?
Yes — and by a noticeable amount. Summer (May–August) is peak season for exterior painting in Toronto, and demand for licensed painters is highest then. Labour rates for exterior work run 10–15% higher in peak season compared to fall.
Interior painting works year-round since you're inside, so booking interior work in fall or winter can save you 10–20% and often means faster scheduling. We have the same crew and the same quality year-round — off-season just means we're less booked out.
Exterior work is weather-dependent and can't be done in temperatures below 10°C or in rain, so the window is roughly May through October. If you want an exterior repaint done right, book early — the good crews fill up fast in June and July.
How do I know if a painting quote is fair?
A few things to look for when comparing quotes from Toronto painters:
- Scope is spelled out in writing. Does the quote list exactly what's included — walls, ceilings, trim, number of coats, prep approach? Vague quotes protect the contractor, not you.
- Licensing and insurance are confirmed. Ask for proof. Uninsured painters are common and the liability risk for you as a homeowner is real.
- The lowest price usually excludes prep. A quote that seems significantly cheaper than others often skips proper prep work — cleaning, sanding, caulking. The paint job looks fine for six months, then starts peeling.
- HST is included or clearly excluded. Make sure you're comparing apples to apples. Some quotes show ex-HST, others include it.
- Payment terms are reasonable. A small deposit is normal. Asking for full payment upfront before any work is done is a red flag.
